It’s been a tough year for everyone and we would like to address that within this conference, hosted by National Executive member, Wendy Hardy. The conference will be held via Zoom on the 14th November from 10:00 till 13.30 and our excellent and knowledgeable NEU activists Debs Gwynn (National Executive member) and Jenny Cooper (Special Schools rep) will be on hand to give us an update on SEND and answer questions as part of an expert panel. We will also have CPD workshops with colleagues from NASEN, details will be available later along with the choice of workshop.

Justice for Zane Gbangbola
There will be a memorial webinar on Wednesday 21 October at 7pm to mark what would have been Zane Gbangbola’s 14th birthday. Zane died aged seven when hydrogen cyanide was detected at his home – thought to have been released by an unregulated landfill site during floods. Zane’s family are seeking to have his death properly investigated via an Independent Panel Inquiry. Speakers include Matt Wrack of the FBU and Labour leader Keir Starmer. Please circulate details to your members.
Youth Climate Summit
Designed by teachers and young people, UK schools will come together for the NEU-supported online Youth Climate Summit (9-13 November). Participants will take action to create a more just, sustainable world and make commitments and pledges for the planet. The NEU is contributing a teacher CPD session on eco-schools. Please ask your members to encourage their schools and students to book their free tickets here.
Pay Bargaining for Reps – Online (East Midlands)
The union’s bargaining priority campaign for this term is ‘Pay’ in line with the National Executive’s Bargaining Strategy, the ‘Building From The Base’ paper and our Bargaining Calendar (see below). Whilst the union realises that COVID-19 is at the forefront of members thoughts, these campaigns are aimed at building our industrial strength in the workplace, empowering and training our reps and building networks within Branches. The training will include methodologies to help achieve these aims.
As the training is a pivotal part of the campaign, it important that Branch Officers and reps attend. The training is on Wednesday 14th October and Wednesday 21st October both at 5.30pm via ‘Zoom’. Attendance is required at both sessions which will last no longer than 90 minutes. The training has been timetabled in the late afternoon to facilitate the attendance of working teachers and those with caring responsibilities.
Please sign up for the training here
